Pro SharePoint 2007 Development Techniques

Posted on 11/11/2007 @ 7:52 PM in #Books Reviewed | 3 comments | 2627 views

This review was long pending.

I was the reviewer for Pro SharePoint 2007 Development Techniques.

This book is different than other sharepoint books I have read/reviewed. I can split it amongst two major categories.

Category 1 is Niche topics, such as WSRP, DSL etc as applied to SharePoint. These topics are nearly impossible to find covered anywhere. So if you need coverage on that information, this is where you look.

Category 2 is hardcore SP topics, such as using AJAX in webparts for connections, reporting services + SP, and a deep coverage of search.

I wouldn't recommend this book to someone looking to learn sharepoint. Scot Hilier's book is better suited for that purpose. However, if you are a seasoned SharePoint developer, this book is a decent read.

Full disclaimer: I was the reviewer for this book.

This sounds like it will teach you how to become the Macguyver of Sharepoint.

Sahil, you write that "DSL etc as applied to SharePoint" is a niche topic. Maybe you could look at http://www.it-dev.pl/en/Components/sharepoint_components.aspx where we present Sharepoint DSL Toolkit for Visual Studio. This tool allows you to model Sharepoint 2007 site/lists templates along with content types etc, generate solution and deploy it to a Sharepoint server. It allows you also to model and deploy lookup columns, so you have it in one place easy to manage. And MacGuyver is a guy who can do a helicopter using box of matches and things he can find during the episode :) almost like Chuck Norris!
